Every construction project generates thousands of data points. RFIs, submittals, daily reports, inspection results, change orders, safety observations. The problem is not the lack of data. The problem is that most projects have no system for turning that data into decisions.
On a $280 million healthcare project I worked on in Northern California, we faced a challenge that no one on the team had dealt with before. The building used a precast structural system with over 2,000 individual elements, each weighing up to 35 tons. No tracking methodology existed for monitoring the erection, tolerance compliance, and remediation status of that many elements on a healthcare project. So I built one from scratch.
The tracking system was simple. Each element was documented during erection with its location, tolerance measurements, and any deficiencies noted. Out-of-tolerance panels were flagged in real time so remediation could happen before the next element was placed on top and the deficiency became permanent. By the end of the project every element had been tracked and every deficiency had been caught.
I used the same approach for the building envelope testing program on the same project. Hundreds of windows required ASTM E1105 water infiltration testing and results were scattered across commissioning reports with no centralized view. I created a color-coded visual log mapping every window by elevation. When I plotted the results I noticed that failures were concentrated on specific elevations rather than being random. That pattern pointed to a systemic installation issue which we would never have identified without the visual tracking system.
The takeaway is straightforward. Construction projects do not fail because of a lack of effort. They fail because information is scattered, patterns are invisible, and decisions get made on gut feel instead of data. Building a tracking system does not require expensive software. Sometimes a well-designed spreadsheet and the discipline to use it every day is all it takes.
The construction industry is slowly catching up to other industries when it comes to data-driven decision making. But the gap is still enormous. The professionals who learn to build simple, effective tracking systems and use data to drive decisions will always have an advantage.
